The DCA is a flexible, high performance solution for the media adaptation and delivery to a wide range of devices and networks. The system can be used to adapt live as well as pre-recorded media content in real-time with minimal latency, avoiding the need to perform off-line transcoding. In addition, resultant media objects can be optionally cached as required to give maximum efficiency and throughput.
The DCA supports device-side access using progressive download and RTSP, the two methods that are used by an overwhelming number of handsets today to access media content. On the content server side, the DCA supports access from a very wide range of sources including HTTP, MMS and RTSP servers as well as live sources. The DCA adapts between a diverse range of file formats and codec types before delivering the content using the protocols and codecs best suited to the client's device and network.
Dan Hudson shows the video quality of Live TV on an iPhone using the DCA.
The DCA features a PHP based API that allows its integration with application servers and databases with minimal efforts. Source media URIs and target media parameters are defined using application scripts which can also interface with external application servers and database.
Typical applications of DCA include:
Content portals for handsets
Live TV streaming to handsets
Video surveillance
Live and recorded content adaptation for application/media servers
Content optimization for network resource minimization
Mobile advertizing
User generated content for IPTV
Handset & Terminal Support
The DCA supports the widest range of mobile devices on the market to day, including the Blackberry, G1, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, SonyEricsson and the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.
As the DCA does transport adaptation (e.g. RTSP to HTTP Progressive Download with on the-fly transcoding), the DCA can be used to stream Live Video and Video On Demand (VOD) for the iPhone using its standard Safari browser.
Features
Benefits
On-demand content adaptation
Media adaptation and conversion is carried out in real-time avoiding the need to perform off-line transcoding
Real-time content optimization
Interfaces allow operators to optimize content for handset capabilities and screen resolution
Optional content caching
Caching capability for frequently demanded content minimizes server resources and improves capacity density
Rapid integration with existing application platforms
Supports a powerful script based API for rapid application development and integration with content management, reporting and billing systems
